Maryland Carey Law’s Master of Science in Law focusing on Higher Education Law addresses the critical need for legal education across multiple sectors of this dynamic, complex, and rapidly evolving area.
During your first year, you will complete required core courses as well as an in-depth survey in Higher Education Law. In your second year, you will take seminars focused on Higher Education Law on such topics as:
- Federal and state regulation of higher education institutions
- Student rights and responsibilities (Title IX, due process, campus discipline)
- Employment and faculty governance in higher education
- Accreditation and regulatory compliance
- Institutional policies and risk management
- Privacy and data protection in education (FERPA)
- Ethics and legal issues in academic administration
In your second year you will also complete a Capstone Project under the guidance of a faculty member or practitioner advisor. Your project must demonstrate that you are able to apply at least three of the program’s core competencies to a practical challenge.
