Laura McWeeney recently retired from her position as associate vice president for procurement and business affairs at the University of Maryland University College. Prior to her appointment, she was director of insurance for the State of Maryland, responsible for the overall operations of the state’s Insurance Program. Previously, she served for 20 years in the Office of the Attorney General including as an assistant attorney general in the Antitrust Division, as supervisor of Tort Claims Litigation in the Civil Division and, finally, as principal counsel to Treasurer Nancy Kopp.

Professor McWeeney has litigated numerous cases in the state’s appellate courts. She is the recipient of the Treasurer’s Exceptional Service Award and the Maryland Military’s Meritorious Service Medal for successfully defending the state in a case of first impression concerning the non-justiciability doctrine and the Maryland National Guard. She has served in various leadership positions in the MSBA Administrative Law Section, including as chair in 2003.

 

Professor McWeeney received a B.S., cum laude, from Georgetown University where she received the Loyola Award. She received a law degree, with high honors, from the National Law Center of George Washington University where she was Order of the Coif. She is a member of the bars in Maryland, the District of Columbia, and the United States Supreme Court.
