Benjamin Charlton is an experienced felony trial attorney working with the Forensic Mental Health Division of the Maryland Office of the Public Defender. He litigates criminal cases involving competency, criminal responsibility, and mens rea defenses; and helps attorneys across the state litigate their cases involving clients with mental illness. Professor Charlton trains attorneys at all levels and leads strategic litigation efforts involving issues where mental illness and the criminal system intersect. In addition to his work with the Maryland Office of the Public Defender, he serves on the Mental Health Committee of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and as an appointee to the Maryland Behavioral Health Care Treatment and Access Commission.
