Professor Liza Vertinsky elected to ALI

University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law Professor Liza Vertinsky has been elected to the American Law Institute (ALI).   

Membership in the American Law Institute is an exceptional professional honor. Formed in 1923, the prominent institute is the leading independent organization in the United States producing scholarly work to clarify, modernize, and otherwise improve the law. 

Vertinsky joined the Maryland Carey Law faculty in 2022. She is a health and technology lawyer and economist who researches and teaches at the intersection of law, economics, and social justice. Her areas of expertise include the regulation of emerging technologies and healthcare markets, AI and the law, intellectual property and innovation, contract law and theory, and law and economics.  

Her most recent publications include “Customary Corruption” in the William & Mary Law Review (co-authored with Ani Satz); “A Theory of Genetic Dimensions in the Law” in the Indiana Law Journal (co-authored with Yaniv Heled); “Pharmaceutical (Re)capture” in the Yale Journal of Health Policy, Law and Ethics, and “Reorienting Patent Policy Towards Responsible AI Design,” a chapter in the Research Handbook on the Law of Artificial Intelligence (Elgar Press). 

Vertinsky earned her JD, Magna Cum Laude, from Harvard Law School and a PhD in Economics from Harvard University. She clerked for Judge Stanley Marcus, first for the U.S. District Court in the Southern District of Florida and then for the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals.    

ALI membership consists of eminent judges, lawyers, and law professors from all areas of the United States and from many foreign countries, selected for professional achievement and demonstrated interest in improving the law.
