Congratulations again on your admittance into the Master of Science in Law program. We are delighted that you will be joining us at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law. Below you will find next steps and more information about enrolling and preparing to start the program. If you applied using unofficial transcripts, you will need to request that official transcripts be sent directly to Maryland Carey Law from the issuing institution prior to enrollment. Students must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is to be eligible for admission to the MS in Law program. Students will not be registered for courses until Maryland Carey Law receives their official transcripts. Visit the Apply page to learn more.
If you haven’t already done so, create your UMID. You should have been notified already that an electronic identity (UMID) has been created for you in UMB’s system, which has allowed you to access SURFS. Follow the instructions for setting up your UMID.
You should have received instructions and information about setting up your UMB e-mail account shortly after your admission. You can find information about Office365 on the Center for Information Technology Services page on the UMB website. If you don't see your instructions on creating your UMB e-mail account, please email the Office Admissions at msl@law.umaryland.edu.
You must have a UMID and password to access our registration system and to access Blackboard, where class assignments will be posted. If you have not created your “@umaryland.edu” email account, you will be unable to access assignments and other information on Blackboard at that time.
All official communications from the University and from the law school will be sent to your @umaryland.edu address throughout your program. If you have questions about how to create your UMID and email account, please contact the Office of Admissions at msl@law.umaryland.edu or 410.706.3492.
SURFS is the university’s hub for course registration, grades, billing, and financial aid information. Log in to SURFS using your UMID and password.
You can also access the SURFS login portal by visiting umaryland.edu/surfs and selecting “Log in to SURFS” from the menu.
While logged in to SURFS, please update and confirm your contact and emergency contact information.
If you will need financial aid for the coming academic year, you must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Visit the FAFSA website to read the instructions and complete the form. When asked for a school code, use 00210400. Please direct any questions about need-based financial aid and the FAFSA to the law school’s financial aid coordinator, Marilyn Jones, at mmjones@law.umaryland.edu.
*Graduate students must take a minimum of six credits each semester to obtain financial aid.

You may purchase books through any vendor you prefer. To see the list of required books for your first semester, visit the University's online bookstore. You will need the following first year course numbers to find your books:
- LAW 626E - U. S. Law and the Legal System
- LAW 627E - Legal Methods
- LAW 628E - Legal Research
Your course numbers can also be found in SURFS.

Requests for accommodations are evaluated by the University’s Office of Educational Support and Disability Services (ESDS). Maryland Carey Law implements the accommodations determined by the OESDS to be appropriate. Note: You must reapply for accommodations each semester that you will need them.

Blackboard is the system that will be used to administer your MS in Law courses. There you will find a Student Orientation page with academic policies, technical information and support, best practices for online learning, book lists for your first semester classes, and more.
Use your UMID and password to log in to Blackboard. You can also access Blackboard by visiting www.law.umaryland.edu, clicking the “Log In” link at the top of the page (if accessing by desktop computer), and selecting “Blackboard” from the list. If you have trouble accessing Blackboard or any of the content, please send an email to blackboard@law.umaryland.edu.
