International Disability Law

Course Description

This course will provide students the opportunity to explore key aspects of international human rights law in the context of disability. This course will establish the foundation, concept, and purpose of the nearly universally ratified UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). It will examine current issues areas related to implementation of the CRPD, including voting and political rights of persons with disabilities; accountability for serious violations of international human rights and humanitarian law against persons with disabilities; deinstitutionalization and reparations for past wrongs; the application of reasonable accommodation in the context of employment; rights in relation to landmine survivors and other persons with disabilities who have survived armed conflict; legal capacity and decision-making rights for persons with disabilities; forced treatment and medical experimentation on persons with disabilities; and monitoring disability rights violations by the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
