Mike Beland ’04 teaches courses that support semester-long internships on Capitol Hill. His teaching of how the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives work intermingles the practical and academic while providing students with an experiential learning environment. Through his courses, students have interned in dozens of congressional offices and committees over the years.

Professor Beland is also a managing director at Deloitte & Touche, LLP, where he advises public and private sector clients on regulatory challenges. He has previously held senior positions in the legislative and executive branches of the U.S. government as a lawyer for the Committee on Homeland Security in the U.S. House of Representatives and presidentially appointed chief of staff in the Office of Infrastructure Protection in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Professor Beland was also appointed to serve as a member of the staff of the former governor of New Hampshire, John H. Lynch.

He graduated from the University of Wisconsin at Madison; attended the London School of Economics and Political Science; and holds a JD from Maryland Carey Law. He is licensed to practice law in the state of New Hampshire.
