Clinic Perspective: The Hon. Wayne A. Brooks '84, Associate Judge, Howard County District Court

What did you enjoy about your clinic experience?
It was the fulfillment of a dream of many law students, including mine! I had an opportunity to work on cases, meet with clients, develop a case strategy, and litigate certain matters in court, of course with the guidance and supervision of licensed attorneys. For a 3L it also helped to cement the knowledge attained in my various classes over the years in order to use such information to benefit my clients. Finally, it jump-started my career with the confidence of knowing that I had the tools needed to help my clients!

Was there a particularly memorable moment from your clinic experience that you'd like to share?
I had an opportunity to appear before one of my mentors, the Honorable Robert Bell. When I realized he was the judge I was both excited and extremely nervous. But he was fantastic and set me at ease! It was certainly a memorable experience, especially since I never had the opportunity to appear before him again!

What was your greatest takeaway from your clinic experience?
I had two very driven professors that supervised me. During my time in the clinic, I was first concerned about graduating; I was also the Student Bar President; and I worked part time to help pay bills. To say that my plate was full would be an understatement! But what my professors reminded me was that a lawyer had an ethical obligation to zealously represent their clients, regardless of what else was going on in their lives. I carried that admonishment with me throughout my career, and I’m certain that it helped me to serve my clients well and kept me from possible complaints.
