Paying it Forward
“Donor support is important because law school is expensive. It helps ease the burden on students,” says alumna Lauren Harrison ’17. At Maryland Carey Law, Harrison served as honor board chair with the Student Bar Association, the official representative of the school student body, as well as secretary of the Business Law Society, which provides networking and career opportunities. Harrison received a scholarship from DLA Piper, a global law firm with lawyers in more than 40 countries. “I believe you get places on the shoulders of other people,” she says, “and I plan to pay it forward.”
Opportunity for Success
“None of what I’ve been blessed to achieve would have been possible without the generosity of people willing to support the educational endeavors of students they don’t know,” says Bryan Saxton ’09, the first recipient of the Osborne Scholarship, which provides full tuition and fees for an outstanding full-time student engaged in a professional career. The Osborne Scholarship allowed Saxton, the president of the Maryland Carey Law Alumni Board and a partner at Chase Law Group, to attend law school full time, despite his plans to work his way through the evening program. “There is no way that I could have afforded to attend the School of Law without the generosity of Hamish and Christy Osborne.” The late Hamish Osborne ’86 and his wife, Christy, left a lasting legacy on Maryland Carey Law and on Saxton. “Without such gifts, people like me would not have the opportunity to attend a place like the University of Maryland,” Saxton says. “Because of them, students will have the opportunity and a future in areas that they’ve only aspired to or perhaps never even imagined.”

Our students are among the most diverse in the country, and those varied backgrounds are the pillars on which our community thrives. Highlighted by student scholarships, the Diversity & Inclusion Scholarship program recruits and highlights the state and region’s top talent while providing a support structure for those students. The program focuses on mentorship, inclusion in the Baltimore legal community, and recruitment of diverse students into top legal jobs. This program builds off our successful efforts to create a pipeline of students from our neighboring communities.
