James J. Hanks, Jr. '67, a partner at Venable LLP specializing in mergers and acquisitions, was voted the top lawyer by the other 23 winners of this year's Daily Record annual Leadership in Law award.
Hanks has handled more than 250 mergers and acquisitions, including many valued at more than a billion dollars, for clients as diverse as 3M, Huntington Bancshares and Stanley Works.
In addition to practicing law in Baltimore, Hanks is a senior lecturer at Northwestern Law School and a visiting senior lecturer at Cornell Business School. He’s also taught classes in corporation law in Beijing, Paris, Madrid and Hamburg, where former German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt recently presented him with the Honorary Medal of Bucerius Law School, the country’s first private law school.
“There is no more satisfying honor that any lawyer can receive than to be recognized by his peers, especially by such a distinguished group as this year’s honorees,” Hanks said at the awards ceremony, The Daily Record reported.
A member of the American Law Institute, Hanks has been a drafter of the Corporate Director’s Guidebook and the Fund Director’s Guidebook. He is also co-editor of the Handbook for the Conduct of Shareholders’ Meetings.
