Prof. Monopoli, 7 Graduates Receive Leadership Award
Paula Monopoli, Professor of Law and Marbury Research Professor, and seven School of Law graduates will receive the 2009 Leadership in Law Award from
The Daily Record. The award recognizes lawyers and judges who have demonstrated exceptional dedication to the legal profession and the community.
The Daily Record recognized Professor Monopoli, Law School graduates, and other award recipients during a ceremony on November 20.
In 2003, Professor Monopoli founded the Women, Leadership & Equality Program at the School of Law. The program conducts research and offers an innovative curriculum that explores gender disparities in the legal profession. Students in the program also provide support to a variety of public interest organizations that work on women's issues, including the National Women's Law Center, the Women's Law Center of Maryland and the House of Ruth. In 2008, Professor Monopoli was asked to develop the School of Law's new
Leadership, Ethics and Democracy (LEAD) Initiative's curriculum for law students.
"I am very grateful for this award and the recognition it brings not only to me but to my colleagues and students who are part of the University of Maryland's
Women, Leadership & Equality Program. It is a privilege to be a law professor and to shape the development of young lawyers through scholarship, teaching and mentoring. I am also deeply grateful to the lawyers and judges who have given their time to mentor the students in the WLE Program and to lend their expertise to the new LEAD Initiative at the School of Law aimed at fostering the development of future leaders in the profession and in the broader community."
Along with Professor Monopoli,
The Daily Record will recognize a dynamic group of alumni.
