Distinguished Visiting Professor Sonia Picado, Chair of the Inter-American Institute of Human Rights, to Lecture on "Balancing Peace and Justice in Times of Crisis" on Jan. 23
Distinguished Visiting Professor Sonia Picado, Chair of the Inter-American Institute of Human Rights’ board of directors, will present the lecture "Balancing Peace and Justice in Times of Crisis" on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at 5 p.m. in the School of Law’s Ceremonial Courtroom.
Ms. Picado is a former member of the Legislative Assembly of Costa Rica, and former President of the National Liberation Party. In 1999, she led the International Commission of Inquiry on East Timor to study human rights conditions there and presented her reporter to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. She has served as the Costa Rican Ambassador to the United States and as Judge and Vice-Chair of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.
Ms. Picado represented her country on the Experts Committee for the Promotion of Human Rights in Central America. She is the first woman in Latin America elected dean of a law school (at the University of Costa Rica) and has taught courses and seminars at the Inter-American Institute of Human Rights.
The Distinguished Visiting Professor Lecture will be followed by a reception in the atrium at 6 p.m.
