School of Law unveils new website
The University of Maryland School of Law has launched a new website. Reorganized to be more user-centered, the new website showcases the School of Law's academic mission and its outstanding faculty
"The new website consists of more than 6000 individual files. It required the creation from scratch of more than 1015 new pages. Additionally, more than 4900 existing PDF, image and miscellaneous files had to be individually relocated to the new site. It's a collaborative project of a diverse team," said Teresa K. LaMaster, Assistant Dean for Technology Affairs and leader of the project. Planning for the project began well over a year ago when a committee including Dean LaMaster, Barbara Gontrum, Assistant Dean for Library Services, Robyn Kirby, Director of Information Technology and Nancy Zibron, Director of Communications began planning the site architecture. Consulting widely throughout the School of Law and drawing heavily on the School of Law 2001 self study, they developed an architecture concept that highlighted the School of Law's core missions.
Web page templates reflecting a new a look and feel and improved navigation were designed by Nick Peters, Web Developer of the campus Center for Information Technology Services (CITS). Maggi Smith, Assistant Director for Information Technology Support reformatted existing Law School web materials into the new templates. Baorong Feng and Michael Jewell, IT Support Specialists, undertook a major database development project. A redeveloped registration database now houses information on faculty profiles, publications, courses, and schedules. The new database permits faculty publications, recent scholarship and course descriptions to display to the web and results in a new electronic course catalog
. Lila Faulkner, Electronic Services Librarian, spearheaded the development of the Thurgood Marshall Law Library
portion of the site and led the library web development group. Together with Nick Peters, she developed a specialized library template to help make library resources more readily available to faculty, students and other researchers.
Many other School of Law staff played critical roles in the development of the site. Janet Sinder, Associate Director for Research Services, managed all of the data regarding faculty publications
. Ms. Sinder also served on the Library Web Committee, along with Bill Sleeman, Jenny Smith, Maxine Grosshans and Susan Herrick. Robyn Kirby built, formatted and reformatted countless pages on a short turn-around. Pamela Daniels worked diligently at posting materials and maintaining the old and new sites simultaneously for a month. Tracey Pettiford, Maureen Bakke, Judy Lank, Robyn Stewart and Janice Dixon all assisted with data entry.
