Persistence, resilience and family support are critical for achieving professional success, according to a panel of seven federal, state and local judges who met with students in the Women, Leadership & Equality (WLE) Program at Maryland Carey Law.

The November 19 event was held in conjunction with the International Women Insolvency Restructuring Confederation (IWIRC) Greater Maryland Network, whose members also participated.  IWIRC is a professional group committed to the success of women working in insolvency and restructuring.

During the panel discussion, the judges described their individual career paths, the impact of gender on judging and the characteristics of successful lawyering, agreeing that civility and preparation were essential for practicing attorneys.

Professor Paula Monopoli, founding director of the WLE Program noted, “It was extremely helpful to our students to have the chance to hear these distinguished judges tell their unique stories about how they ascended to the bench."

The judges participating in the panel discussion were:

Catherine C. Blake, Chief Judge
United States District Court for the District of Maryland

Nancy V. Alquist, Chief Judge
United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Maryland

Wendelin I. Lipp, Judge
United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Maryland

Andrea M. Leahy, Judge
Maryland Court of Special Appeals

Kathleen Gallogly Cox, Circuit Administrative Judge
Circuit Court for Baltimore County, Maryland

Ellen M. Heller, Judge (ret.)
Circuit Court for Baltimore City, Maryland and
Member, Maryland Carey Law Board of Visitors

Lisa A. Hall Johnson, Judge
