School of Law Hooding Ceremony, Commencement Set for May 21

2009 Hooding Ceremony

Judge Andre Davis of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit will deliver the keynote address at the School of Law's 11:30 a.m. Hooding Ceremony on May 21 at the Hippodrome Theatre. Judge Davis, a 1978 Maryland Law graduate and adjunct faculty member, previously served on the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland.

"He is a man of the highest legal caliber. He'll stand up for the Constitution that made our country great," said Sen. Barbara Mikulski during Senate debate on the confirmation in November 2009.

After graduating from Maryland Law, Judge Davis served as an appellate attorney in the Civil Rights Division at the U.S. Department of Justice, and as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland. Judge Davis was appointed as a state judge in 1987, and was elevated to the U.S. District Court in 1995.

As a student at the School of Law, Judge Davis won Best Advocate in the Myerowitz Moot Court Competition and chaired the Honor Board. The faculty awarded him the prestigious Roger Howell Award at graduation. In 2008, Judge Davis received Maryland Law's Benjamin L. Cardin Public Service Award, established in 1990 to recognize alumni for outstanding public service.

The Hooding Ceremony is part of a full slate of activities. Another School of Law graduate, U.S. Congressman Elijah Cummings ´76, will deliver the keynote address at UMB's Commencement in the 1st Mariner Arena.
