UM Carey Law Celebrates 10 Years in Nathan Patz Law Center

In September, 2002, Maryland Carey Law students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends welcomed Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg  to dedicate the Nathan Patz Law Center, the school’s new home.

Many in the group believed the law school had the potential to achieve international stature. But even its most ardent supporters couldn’t have predicted the catalytic effect of the new building on the law school’s rapid ascent.

Almost 200 students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends gathered to celebrate the Law Center's tenth anniversary--and the law school's academic achievements-- Thursday, September 27, 2012, during the second annual Dean's Convocation.  The event included the screening of an anniversary video, an alumni awards ceremony and a keynote address from US Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen.

The law school's growth since 2002, when the new building opened, has been dramatic. For instance, in that academic year the school introduced six new clinics and launched four academic centers--in dispute resolution, international law, intellectual property law, and women and leadership.

Over the decade applications surged, as more than 4,000 applicants competed for just 275 spots.  The student body grew increasingly diverse, attracting representatives from every state and more than a dozen nations.

And faculty scholarship blossomed, with articles and books published by Oxford, Cambridge and other leading houses.

Just as important, the challenge of raising funds to construct and furnish the Law Center created the nucleus of what has grown into a robust philanthropic community of support, including the unprecedented $30 million investment from the W.P. Carey Foundation in 2011.

“Maryland Carey Law is focused on the future,” said Dean Phoebe A. Haddon.  “We’re educating tomorrow’s leaders, the next generation of managing partners, citizen advocates, general counsels, judges, corporate executives, mayors, governors, legislators and public officials in virtually every branch of government.“

In the months ahead, the school will make its 10-year anniversary in the Law Center with a series of events, including a Alumni Reception and Anniversary Celebration in April, 2013.
