UM Carey Law Welcomes Visiting Faculty for Upcoming Academic Year

This year’s four visiting professors bring additional depth in environmental, family and criminal law as well as corporate governance.

Victor B. Flatt, Visiting Professor of Law
BA, Magna Cum Laude, Vanderbilt University
JD, Cum Laude, Northwestern University


Professor Flatt teaches courses in environmental law, natural resources, interagency environmental cooperation, international environmental law, climate change, and the practice of carbon trading at the University of North Carolina School of Law, where he has his permanent appointment. His scholarship has focused on the administration and enforcement of environmental and resource statutes, particularly the Clean Water Act, the Clean Air Act, the Endangered Species Act, and the National Environmental Policy Act. Leigh Goodmark, Visiting Professor of Law
BA, with highest honors, Yale University
JD, with distinction, Stanford University


Based at  the University of Baltimore School of Law, Professor Goodmark brings expertise in clinical legal education, domestic violence, and family law. She has taught at Catholic University’s Columbus School of Law, and practiced family law in the District of Columbia. She is the immediate past president of the Clinical Legal Education Association and president of the Board of Directors of the Women’s Law Center of Maryland. [Read More]

Kami Chavis Simmons, Visiting Professor of Law
BA, Highest Honors, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill
JD, Harvard University


Professor Simmons also joins UM Carey Law from Wake Forest University, where she has taught and written about criminal law.  She has practiced as an associate at private law firms in Washington, D.C., where she participated in various aspects of civil litigation, white-collar criminal defense, and internal investigations. In 2003, she became an Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Columbia, which involved her in a wide range of criminal prosecutions and appeals before the District of Columbia Court of Appeals. Omari Scott Simmons, Visiting Professor of Law
BA, Magna Cum Laude, Wake Forest University
JD, University of Pennsylvania
LLM, University of Cambridge


Bringing a focus on corporate governance and education policy, Professor Simmons comes to UM Carey Law from Wake Forest University. Previously, he was employed as corporate counsel for two multinational corporations and as an associate at the law firm of Wilmer Hale in Washington, D.C. He is a member of the American Law Institute and is the Executive Director of the Simmons Memorial Foundation (SMF), a nonprofit organization that provides college consulting services to vulnerable students.
