Welcoming New Managing Director Heather Terech
The Business Law Program at Maryland Carey Law is pleased to welcome Heather Terech as its new Managing Director. Among her duties as Managing Director, Heather is responsible for counseling students in all things Business Law, managing the Business Law Program, and serving as a point of contact inside the law school for prospective students, alumni, and others.
Heather comes to Maryland Carey Law following a long career with Maryland’s Office of the Public Defender where she specialized in juvenile defense. A 2001 graduate from California Western School of Law, she was admitted to practice in Maryland in 2001. She has a history of supervising and mentoring young attorneys throughout her time in the courtroom trenches. With her legal experience, she will take on the role of guiding, instructing, and supporting law students as they begin their careers.
“Joining the faculty at Carey Law has been a thrilling career change for me.” Heather continues, “The faculty, students, and staff have been very welcoming. Helping people has been a staple in my life and this is a brand new venue to continue doing that. I want to make a positive impact by assisting students navigate their law school experience and working with faculty to enhance the overall experience for them.”
Heather joins the Business Law Program following the departure of Associate Director, Hilary Hansen. Hilary had been with the Business Law Program since 2008 and helped to develop and grow the Business Law Track, which launched in 2011. Under her stewardship the Business Law Track graduated nearly 150 students. Other highlights of Hilary’s time include advising and coaching dozens of student teams in business law themed competitions, mentoring each new crop of JBTL students, and overseeing the Business Law Program’s externship program.
“It was an honor and privilege to have been a part of the Business and IP Law Programs during an exciting time of growth and change,” Hilary explains. “I am deeply grateful for the many rewarding years I enjoyed at Maryland Carey Law, and I feel especially fortunate to have worked with such a wonderful community of students, faculty, staff members, and alumni.”
The Business Law Track just passed its ten year anniversary and now consists of over 75 current students. Since its founding, the Business Law Track has graduated 143 students, has nearly doubled the full-time faculty within the program, and in addition to launching the Bankruptcy Clinic in 2016, is proud to offer students a new opportunity to practice business law through a partnership with the Intellectual Property and Entrepreneurship Clinic beginning in 2021.
The Director of the Business Law Program, Professor Michael Van Alstine, welcomed Heather Terech with enthusiasm. “Both I, personally, and the entire Business Law Program are absolutely thrilled to welcome Heather to Maryland Carey Law," he observed. "In her short time with us thus far, she has been an exceptional addition to our team and we look forward to seeing all the wonderful assets Heather will bring to our program. Unfortunately, we also had to say goodbye to my friend and former Associate Director Hilary Hansen. I am not exaggerating when I say that there would be no Business Law Program at Maryland Carey Law without Hilary. Her presence is felt in every corner of the Program and she will be deeply missed.”
