Gender Violence Clinic

The Gender Violence Clinic explores the ways in which gender and violence intersect. Students will examine several contexts in which issues of gender and violence overlap, including intimate partner abuse, trafficking, violence against imprisoned individuals, and violence and discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. The course will pay particular attention to the experiences of people of color and low income people experiencing violence and abuse. Students will engage in individual representation of clients in a range of cases implicating gender and violence. Subjects for litigation include domestic violence protective or peace orders; divorce; custody; immigration relief, including Violence Against Women Act self-petitions or T or U visa applications; expungement of criminal records for victims of trafficking; sexual orientation and gender identity discrimination; and violence against prisoners. Students may also engage in systemic advocacy work through legislative or community education projects.

Students who enroll in this course are required to attend the Law Practice Orientation Program.

Four slots in the Gender Violence Clinic will be dedicated to restorative justice and sexual violence prevention with Baltimore City middle school students. The Levitas Initiative for Sexual Assault Prevention is an innovative research program that is evaluating the effectiveness of using restorative educational and responsive practices to prevent sexual harm and is the only program of its kind in the country. Levitas Initiative students will be trained in facilitating restorative dialogue circles to deliver a sexual violence prevention curriculum to middle school students and to facilitate responsive restorative justice circles to incidents of sexual harassment in the schools when they occur. Levitas Initiative students will also have the opportunity to participate in the research and evaluation aspects of the program. For students who wish to have some exposure to litigation, there will be an opportunity to couple the Levitas work with handling a domestic violence protective order case. Students will be asked to indicate whether they are seeking to fill one of the Levitas slots.
