Advanced Bioethics and the Law Seminar/Course

In Spring 2021, this seminar will examine the impact of advancements in the biosciences on a variety of legal and policy issues. Topics will likely include the doctrine of informed consent, decision-making for incompetent patients, withholding and withdrawing life-sustaining care, physician-assisted suicide and euthanasia, assisted reproduction, avoidance of reproduction, the sale/donation of body parts and services, and medical and law enforcement uses of genetic information. In examining these various issues, students will consider the content and consistency of current law, the policy goals motivating legal regulation, the impact of technological innovation, and directions for legal reform. Seminar students may use their paper to satisfy the Advanced Writing Requirement.
