Prior to his retirement from full time teaching, law school Prof. Emeritus Jerome E. Deise directed the Criminal Defense Clinic at the University of Maryland Carey School of Law, where he and his students represented clients in Maryland state and federal criminal courts.
In addition, Prof. Deise developed, and was until his retirement, Director of the law school’s nationally ranked Trial Advocacy Program. He continues to teach Advanced Trial Advocacy and Trial Evidence. Prof. Deise taught Evidence, Trial Evidence, Criminal Law, Comparative Professional Responsibility (King’s College, Scotland), Trial Advocacy and Advanced Trial Advocacy. He has published in the areas of Evidence, Criminal/ Constitutional Law and Clinical Legal Education.
Prof. Deise is an Academic Fellow of the Roscoe Pound Institute, a legal “think tank” dedicated to the cause of promoting access to civil justice through its programs, publications and research grants. In 2004 Prof. Deise was awarded the institute's prestigious Richard S. Jacobson Award for Excellence in Teaching Trial Advocacy, a national award given annually to the outstanding law professor “who exemplifies the best attributes of the trial lawyer as teacher, mentor and advocate.” In addition, Prof. Deise has been awarded the University of Maryland School of Law Award for Outstanding Teacher of the Year.
Prior to joining the faculty of the Carey School of law, Prof. Deise was Chief Attorney of the Capital Defense Division of the Maryland Office of the Public Defender.
