Congratulations on your admission to Maryland Carey Law!

I welcome you on behalf of our entire community, and eagerly anticipate you joining us in August 2024.

Whether you plan to pursue traditional legal practice or set your sights on a corporate, non-profit, or entrepreneurial path, Maryland’s nationally-ranked specialty programs and abundant experiential learning opportunities in the second largest legal market in the country provide our students with a strong foundation to excel in their career. 

As you decide which law school to attend this fall, I encourage you to join us for our Admitted Student Events, including both virtual and in-person events. Admitted Student In-Person Visit Opportunities

Tours
Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 12:00 pm 
Join an admissions officer and/or current student for an in-person tour of the law school on daily at 12:00 pm this winter and spring. You must register at least 24 hours in advance. Register here.

If you are unable to tour the law school on those days of the week, we would be happy to work around your schedule. Please email us at admissions@law.umaryland.edu so that we can schedule a personalized visit for you!  

Class Visits

Prospective students have the opportunity to join us in-person for a law school class this fall. Housing Webinar

Current students will host a Housing Q&A where they will discuss the pros and cons of living both on and off campus and share information about their experiences living in Baltimore. They will also answer questions regarding housing, living in the city, and student life at Maryland Carey Law.

The Crisis of Constitutional Democracy
Monday, January 8, 2024; 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm EST
Presented by Antonia Baraggia (University of Milan and Distinguished Visiting Professor this spring) and Mark A. Graber. The program will discuss attacks on constitutional democracy in Poland, Hungary, the United States and Israel, as well as within the broader European Union, the prospects for continued constitutional democracy in those regimes, and the prospects of constitutional democracy in general across the globe. The event will be moderated by Associate Dean Peter Danchin.

Journal of Health Care Law and Policy: Uneasy Alignments

Join us for a publication event regarding a special Issue of the journal focusing on the uneasy alignments between legal systems and mental health interventions. The Issue stems from the Spring 2023 Symposium, which focused on the use of legal coercion to force compliance with mental health interventions across various areas, including child welfare, families, and criminal legal systems. The Symposium was co-sponsored by the School of Social Work Thursz Social Justice Lecture Series and the Journal of Health Care Law & Policy

The Gibson-Banks Center for Race and the Law will present this Anchor Event featuring Professor Orisanmi Burton who will discuss his recently released book, Tip of the Spear: Black Radicalism, Prison Repression, and the Long Attica Revolt (University of California Press 2023). Professor Michael Pinard (Faculty Director, Gibson-Banks Center), and Brandon Miller, 2L (Erek L. High Stakes: Legislating Cannabis in Maryland

Guests from the Public Health Law Clinic will delve into the current General Assembly session and the pending legislation set to impact Maryland’s cannabis industry. SCOTUS, Ethics, and Legitimacy: A Conversation with Senator Feingold

ACS President and former U.S. Senator Russ Feingold will visit the Law School to discuss recent efforts to enforce an ethical code of conduct for the Supreme Court, along with broader topics concerning the Court's legitimacy, ranging from recent controversial decisions to their potential involvement in the 2024 Presidential election. Professor Graber will moderate the discussion, bringing perspectives from his recent research on the Fourteenth Amendment and its application to candidates for elected office who have taken part in an insurrection.

Journal of Race, Religion, Gender, and Class Equal Pay Symposium: Celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the Equal Pay Act
Friday, March 15, 2024; 9:00 am - 5:00 pm EST 
Please join us as we discuss legislative initiatives around the Equal Pay Act at the state and federal level, current pay gaps in the private sector and what lawyers are doing to mitigate them, pay gaps pertaining to race and gender, and recent litigation efforts involving the Equal Pay Act. Anchor Event: Migration, Asylum and Border Policy

This event will give three perspectives on the issues of asylum in the country and at the border: Azadeh Erfani, Senior Policy Analyst with the National Immigrant Justice Center will speak to the national policy conversations in D.C. and elsewhere. Maryland Carey Law students from the Immigration Law and Policy Association will give on-the-ground observations from their spring break trip to the border in Tijuana, Mexico, and students from the Immigration Clinic will talk about their experience of representing asylum seekers in the Baltimore Immigration Court. The event will be moderated by Professor Maureen Sweeney, director of the Chacón Center for Immigrant Justice.

Litigating a Deportation Case Before a Federal Court of Appeals
Wednesday, March 27, 2024; 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm EST
Students in the Federal Appellate Immigration Clinic litigate deportation and immigration detention cases before the federal circuit courts and the administrative Board of Immigration Appeals. At this special event, Dave Anguish (3E), Jackie Gitlin (3L), and Rafael Moreno (3L) who recently briefed and argued a case before the Second Circuit, will discuss their litigation experiences in a conversation moderated by Jess Grover (3L). This event is open to all students, faculty and staff and may be of special interest to those who wish to learn more about the clinic, appellate litigation, and immigration law.

Journal of Business and Technology Law: The Rise and Implications of Artificial Intelligence

This Symposium will provide two panels covering difficult questions and concerns surrounding the rapid and widespread use of Artificial Intelligence. The first panel discusses the implications of Artificial Intelligence on National Security and Cybersecurity, and the second panel explores the intersection of Artificial Intelligence and Legal Personhood.

Prepare for 1L Year

Orientation

Orientation is mandatory and is scheduled for Wednesday, August 14, 2024 - Friday, August 16, 2024. Classes for 1L students will begin Monday, August 19, 2024. 

Students can apply for multiple external opportunities to prepare for law school. 

  1. AT&T Legal Scholars Program  - AT&T’s Legal Department, Lawrence & Bundy LLC, and Kilpatrick are now accepting applications for the 2024 program.  AT&T Legal Scholars is a two-day workshop intended to provide incoming 1Ls from backgrounds which are historically underrepresented in the legal profession with insight into the legal profession and the tools necessary to succeed in law school.  The program will take place virtually July 18 – July 19, 2024.   2. BARBRI Law Preview -  Law Preview is an asynchronous self-guided law school prep course designed to give incoming students a running start heading into law school.  It contains over 30 hours of in-depth 1L instruction taught by law faculty.  It includes content that helps prepare students for the core 1L curriculum as well as skills modules aimed at building study habits and strategies for exam success. Scholarships for this program are provided by law firms who conduct OCI at Maryland Carey Law. Application information forthcoming. 

External Scholarships

You can submit applications for university and state scholarships and external scholarships, all of which have different deadlines depending on the scholarship. You can find additional external scholarships through AccessLex and Fastweb. Please be aware of all deadlines. For example, the LMJ Scholarship Program offers scholarships of $10,000 to first year students with an application deadline of April 14, 2024.
