Student Blackboard Guide
You use your myUM ID and password to log into the UM campus Blackboard system. Your Blackboard username is the same username and password that your use to access SURFS and UMB Webmail.
- Blackboard is located at http://law.blackboard.umaryland.edu.
- Enter your Username.
- Enter your Password.
- You may press the Enter key or click the Login button.

You should now see a page with your current courses listed in the right-hand column.

Although students are automatically enrolled into Blackboard courses after they have registered using SURFS, there are opportunities to
Self Enroll in group sponsored courses such as and the annual Fall Moot Court Competition and the Spring Paul Cordish Writing Competition.
After you have logged into Blackboard you may search for a course that allows self enrollment.
- Select the Courses tab.

- Enter the word competition in the Course Search box.
- Click the Go button.

- Click the name of the competition you wish to enroll in, then click the Enroll button in the resulting pop-up menu.

- The Self Enrollment page will open. Click either Submit button.
- You will receive a Success message. Click the OK button at the bottom right of this page to enter the self-enrolled course. This course will now also be in your Blackboard course list on the main page.
Clearing Metadata from a Word Document Before Uploading to Blackboard
What is Metadata? - Data that describes other data.
For example, the words in a document are data; the information used to identify the author is metadata, also known as Personally Identifiable Information.

Naming Files Before Uploading to Blackboard
Blackboard allows you to attach files when you send email, post to the Discussion Board, a Blog, Wiki, or Journal.
It is critical to name files properly before uploading to Blackboard. Keep the filename as short as possible and
do not use special characters!
The # sign is a special character, do not use it when naming your files.

Submitting a File in Blackboard Using the Assignment Link
Blackboard provides The Assignment Link Tool for you to submit files to your instructors.
If your instructor is using the Assignment Tool you will see the Assignment icon followed by the title which is an active underlined link.
The Assignment Tool allows your instructor to set a Due Date as well as include instructions, attach files, and provide feedback which will all be contained within your assignment package. When you Submit an assignment all files and comments that you supply will be added to your assignment package.

- Select the assignment title link.
- You will see a page with instructions for your Assignment.
- Your instructor may also attach files and they will appear at the bottom
of the Assignment Information section.
- You may attach multiple files by clicking the Browse My Computer button. Locate your file by using the Choose file window and click the Open button.
- To remove a file click the Do not attach link.
- You may type a comment to your professor in the Comments section.
- If you are not ready to submit your work, click the Save as Draft
button to save the text and/or attached files that you have
supplied so far.
WARNING: Using the Save as Draft button is not recommended.
If you miss the submission deadline you will not be able to access this link and your instructor will not receive your file.
- When you're ready to send your work to your instructor click the Submit button.
- You will receive a message that your assignment has been updated when you use either the Save as Draft or Submit buttons.

- Select the Assignment Title link.

The Review Submission History
window opens.
- You will see the date the assignments was submitted.
- Feedback will be in the Comments section.
- Click the OK button when you're finished reviewing feedback.

You may check back to the to see if your instructor has sent additional feedback.

Using Email in Blackboard
Blackboard allows you to send email to all users in your course, to all groups, to different user roles, or to selected users or groups.
