Students may purchase new and used books from the University Bookstore in the Student Center at Pine Street. There are also Internet booksellers. Study Aids are also available in the bookstore and from other students. Student organizations sometimes sell used books at various times throughout the semester. Be sure that when purchasing used books, you are purchasing the correct edition required by your instructor.
A student who wishes to change his or her name, address, email address, or any other relevant information on the University records must complete the appropriate form on SURFS through the campus website. http://simsweb.umaryland.edu/
Each student is assigned an e-mail account during orientation before first year. Accounts are assigned through the campus Center for Information Technology Services (CITS). E-mail is mandatory and items posted on e-mail constitute official notice for all students. When obtaining their campus email account, students are required to sign an agreement in which they acknowledge and consent to abide by the applicable acceptable use policies. School wide postings to student email accounts are not permitted unless the posting relates to a school sponsored event. Postings of books, apartments, tickets or other for sale items and any lost or found items are expressly prohibited. E-mail can be accessed via computers on campus or off-site via the Internet. For more information on student e-mail accounts, stop by the Assistance and Service Center (ASC) Help Desk in the HS/HS Library #LL06. Short term emergency loans are available to assist students in meeting unexpected needs or to cover a period of need while approved financial aid is being processed and for other emergencies. To obtain approval for an emergency loan, contact Marilyn Jones, Student Financial Planning Coordinator located in Suite 280.
In accordance with accreditation standards of the American Bar Association, the University of Maryland Carey School of Law does not permit students who are enrolled in 13 or more credit hours to be employed more than 20 hours per week. First year students enrolled in 13 or more credit hours are not permitted to work at all during the school year, except with permission from the Associate Dean for Students and Student Services, on a case-by-case basis during the second semester only.
All faculty, staff & students are required to present a School of Law ID to the Security Officer when entering the building.
In general, all visitors who state they have legitimate business at the School of Law or Law Library will be allowed to enter upon presentation of an acceptable form of photo identification. Individuals who clearly lack sufficient reason for being in the building will be denied entrance. The School of Law has provided the Security Officers with School of Law VISITOR IDs. Library visitors will be issued VISITOR IDs that are a different color than the standard VISITOR IDs. Specifically, our policy for visitors is:
All visitors, unless noted below, will be required to show the Security Officer a valid driver’s license, a Maryland Identification Card issued by the Maryland Department of Motor Vehicles, some other government issued photo identification card, or a UMB Campus ID to gain entrance to the building.
All visitors will be required to sign the visitor’s log except those with a valid UMB Campus ID or School of Law Adjunct Faculty ID.
Each semester the Dean’s Office will supply the Campus Police Department Supervisor with a list of adjunct faculty and will issue to adjunct faculty SCHOOL OF LAW ADJUNCT FACULTY IDS. Adjunct Faculty will be required to show this ID to the Security Office and wear the IDs while in the building. If they do not have their Adjunct Faculty ID, they should follow the procedures above for regular visitors.
On those occasions when a large public meeting is held at the school’s facilities, the Security Officer may be given a list of meeting attendees and a supply of stick-on School of Law special event ID’s which include the name, location and date of the meeting. These visitors will not be required to sign the visitor’s log. They will, however, be required to show proper identification to the Security Officer and to wear the special event ID while in the building.
Everyone in our community is encouraged to alert the Security Officer or any staff member in a position of responsibility if they notice a visitor who is not wearing a Campus or School of Law ID. The Security Officer may call for support from the Campus Police if he/she feels it is needed.
It is the policy of the University of Maryland Baltimore to conduct business as usual on every scheduled day. Due to inclement weather, however, the Office of the President may decide it is necessary to close
the campus. If so, that decision usually is made by 6:00 a.m. and can
be accessed by calling 410-706-8622. The law school also makes this same information available on our own phone line 410-706-7214 by 6:30 a.m. The law school has authority to make separate decisions regarding late afternoon and evening classes. We try to make those decisions and provide notice to faculty, students and staff no later than 3:00 p.m.
Students, faculty and staff members should tune in to WBAL 1090 AM in Baltimore or WTOP 103.5 FM radio in Washington, D.C. for the announcement of University decisions regarding classes during inclement weather. Call 410-706-UMAB (8622) for the latest, most reliable, information on campus closings.
When the law school is open, individual students and faculty may have to make their own decisions regarding the safety of traveling to and from school. Notice of individual course cancellations will be posted on our website (http://www.law.umaryland.edu/calendar/cancellations.html),
Blackboard and, weather permitting, on the main entrance plasma screen.

The "Lost and Found" is located in the Office of Student Affairs, Suite 280. If you find something that does not belong to you, please drop it off to OSA. If you have lost something, check with OSA to see if it was found.
Students who have lost their ID may check with the Office of Student Affairs to see if it has been returned. If it has not, the student must obtain a new one at his or her own expense. Contact the UMB One Card office for more information: http://www.umb-one.umaryland.edu/.
The student mailboxes are numbered to keep up with enrollment changes in the most efficient manner. At the beginning of each school year, currently enrolled students are assigned a mailbox for school mail, event flyers and intra-campus mail.
Student mailboxes are located on the First Floor. You may obtain a mailbox number by checking the “Mailbox Guide” bulletin board in the mailbox area next to the water fountains. On this board, you will find a list displaying the mailboxes in numerical order with the corresponding name and another list displaying the enrolled students in alphabetical order with the corresponding mailbox number. The list in alphabetical order is also posted down the sides of the bulletin board for your convenience. The “key” to the numbering system can be found on this board as well and shows how the mailboxes are grouped.
At no time will the student’s name replace the number on the mailbox and please do not change it yourself! Also, please do not deface school property ~ this includes taping anything to the mailboxes and altering the numbers in any way.

Students wishing to utilize campus parking must obtain a parking permit from the Parking and Commuter Services Office, located at 622 West Fayette Street on the 2nd floor of the Pearl Street Garage. The permit costs $5 and is valid throughout the school year. It allows students to park on campus, but does not guarantee them a space. To receive the permit, a student must bring 1) a student I.D. card or letter of acceptance to the Law School and 2) proof of vehicle registration. Students may park at the Lexington Garage (located at Lexington and Pine Streets) for $4.00 per day. After 5:00 p.m. students may park in closer, University-owned garages (Grand) for $4.00. Students may also park in metered parking. Metered parking areas are checked regularly and tickets will be issued for meter violations. Most area meters are not available until 9:00 am or 10:00 am, and are not available from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Vehicle owners who have been issued tickets that go unpaid for 30 days are subject to having their vehicles booted. Be especially careful on Baltimore Orioles and Baltimore Ravens game days.
Temporary ADA Student Parking
The Campus makes arrangements for ADA parking for students. Requesting this accommodation is a two step process. First, you must submit documentation of your disability to the Student Health System. They are authorized to approve your request due to its medical nature. The contact number for Student Health is (410) 328-6791. Once you obtain approval, you must contact Parking and Commuter Services. The Parking Office will then attempt to temporarily relocate you out of student parking to a closer garage. The contact number for Parking and Commuter Services is (410)706-6603.
This process can take a bit of time, so please take that into consideration when making your arrangements.
All postings must be approved in advance by the Office of Student Affairs. To obtain an “approved” stamp, come to OSA. You will then be instructed as to which bulletin board(s) you may use for your posting. Nothing may be posted on the walls.
There is no smoking anywhere in the law school or on law school property. A designated smoking area has been provided at the southeast corner of the entrance. Smoking is not allowed directly outside of building entrances, and smoking is not allowed in the Courtyard.

Any UM Carey Law Student who has a suggestion for how to improve any aspect of the law school experience may submit their suggestion on-line.
Student suggestions will be received and reviewed by the Associate Dean for Students and Student Services. She/he will relay the suggestion to the administrator working most closely in the area affected by the student’s suggestion.
Suggestions may be made anonymously.
The Associate Dean for Students and Student Services will advise the student, if known, within two weeks, that the suggestion has been received and any action that has been or will be taken in response.
Reporting a complaint: Any UM Carey Law student who believes there is a significant problem with the School’s program of legal education and its compliance with the American Bar Association’s Accreditation Standards should file a written complaint with the Associate Dean for Students and Student Services. The ABA standards can be accessed on the ABA’s webpage .
The written complaint may be sent by e-mail using the student’s law school e-mail address or submitted in hard copy to the Associate Dean for Students and Student Services, Suite 280, University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law, 500 West Baltimore Street, Baltimore, Maryland 21201.
Contents of the complaint: The complaint must identify the problem in sufficient detail to permit the Assistant Dean to investigate the matter, including the specific Accreditation Standard(s) at issue. The complaint must include the student’s name, e-mail address, home address and telephone number.
Response to the complaint: Within three weeks after receiving a written complaint in proper form, the Assistant Dean shall advise the student of any action the School is taking to address the matter or any further investigation into the matter.
Appeal process: Within ten calendar days of being advised of any action by the School in response to the complaint, the student may appeal that decision to the Dean. The Dean’s decision shall be final.
Maintaining a written record of the complaint: The School shall maintain a record of student complaints submitted during the most recent accreditation period. This record shall include information about how each complaint was resolved.
Cross References: Complaints that allege violations of the law school’s Honor Code, the Student Disciplinary and Appeals Procedures or the University’s Policy on Sex-Based Discrimination of Students will be subject to the policies and procedures set forth in these aforementioned policies.
The law school makes available bulletin board space to profit-making enterprises, but usage of the premises for commercial purposes requires the payment of a rental fee.
Westminster Hall, which is operated by the Westminster Preservation Trust, is available for rental for receptions, meetings, or lectures. With the approval of the President of the Trust, the hall may be reserved for law school activities by faculty or student organizations subject to a fee of $100. Campus organizations are eligible to receive a University discount of 30% off of the customary rental fee for weekday (Monday – Thursday) events. For information about scheduling an event in Westminster Hall, call the manager of rental information at 410 706-2072.
Buildings designated specifically and completely for occupancy by one professional school (for example, the law school building) are administered for scheduling purposes by the dean of that school.
Facilities designed for general campus use, the Student Union Building and the Health Sciences Library auditorium, are available for use by campus groups, both organized and unorganized. The Student Union/Resident Life designee and the Director of Facilities Management, respectively, will schedule utilization of these facilities.
