Student Health Law Organization

The Student Health Law Organization is the law school's predominant organization for students interested in health law and policy. SHLO, as it is affectionately known, has a series of events that it holds to promote awareness of health-related legal issues and enhance student access to health law career opportunities. Some events are held annually, including the What is Health Law? Practioners Panel and Getting a Health Law Job Workshop. SHLO often seeks leaders in health law and regulation as speakers for its events; most recently, in spring 2012 it hosted HHS Inspector General Daniel R. Levinson who gave a talk on A New Era in Medicare Oversight. SHLO also sponsors innovative health law activities such as an annual Health Law Regulatory and Compliance Competition inviting schools from all over the country, the attorney-student mentor program with the Maryland State Bar Association's Health Law Section, a peer-to-peer mentoring program, and service activities at health-related local community organizations.

Blackboard: To join the SHLO Blackboard group, when logged into Blackboard, click on the "Courses" tab and search for 'Student Health Law Organization'. Next, click on the downward arrows to the right of the organization name, and select "Enroll." This will take you to a "Self Enrollment" page, make sure to click "Submit." If you need further assistance enrolling, please email the SHLO Secretary, Elizabeth Peterson, at lizzie.l.peterson@gmail.com.

Maryland Health Law Attorney-Student Mentor Program

The Maryland State Bar Association's Health Law Section and SHLO have partnered to bring health law students the attorney-student mentor program. If you are interested in being matched to a practicing health lawyer, please email Hannah Levinson, SHLO Vice President, at hlevinson@umaryland.edu. Please include your name, law school year, health law-related experience, health law interests, and a brief note about how you will take advantage of being a mentee. We plan to host a mentor-mentee reception for spring/summer 2012 matches at the end of the summer.

Health Law Competitions

SHLO and the Law & Health Care Program host annually the Health Law Regulatory and Compliance Competition where teams of law students from all over the country apply federal health regulations and rules, policies, and federal agency document to a hypothetical fact pattern involving a federal health agency and healthcare stakeholders. More information about this competition can be found here. Also, each year SHLO supports the UMB Interprofessional Patient Management Competition, or IPMC, where teams of students from the schools of law, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and physical therapy work collaboratively to evaluate an assimilated case scenario presenting complex diagnostic, therapeutic, and legal problems.
