In celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the Environmental Law Program, MELS contributed to the fight against global climate change by purchasing 450,000 pounds of carbon dioxide offsets. These offsets made the 2007 Ward Kershaw Environmental Law Symposium “carbon neutral” by offsetting the 67,000 pounds of carbon dioxide that were emitted by the airplane travel of the symposium participants. The participants of the symposium came from 12 different countries and traveled nearly 170,000 miles by airplane. In addition, the purchase of offsets ensured that an additional 380,000 pounds of carbon dioxide would be reduced by funding industrial efficiency and renewable energy projects such as wind farms. Since 1994, MELS successfully bid and retired 76 tons of SO2, thereby reducing the allowable sulfur dioxide emissions that regulated stationary sources are permitted to emit nationwide.
