The Immigration Law & Policy Association strives to not only discuss the issues but, more importantly, to immerse ourselves in the immigrant communities affected by those issues through volunteer driven public interest projects. The ILPA is always open to individuals that are willing to dive in and effectuate change within our local communities.
In Fall 2010, the ILPA partnered with the Tahiri Justice Center and the Immigration Law Section of the ABA to facilitate a workshop, held at American University, for Thai migrant workers that had formerly been victims of human trafficking. Our groups provided the manpower for their legal representatives, the Legal Aid Farmworkers Unit of North Carolina, in completing 60-70 applications for relief for the 19 principal victims and their derivative family members. The workshop was a huge success and brought dozens of advocates from a multitude of backgrounds together in support of this cause - whether as translators, as advising attorneys, or as student aides. Roughly 20 University of Maryland students played an instrumental role in this venture, under the leadership of the ILPA.
Our spring meeting will discuss some of the upcoming projects that we hope to take on this semester. These endeavors include a professional development project, a collaborative venture which will provide an artistic perspective on immigration issues, and, of course, an immigrant community outreach initiative.
