"The Courts must declare the sense of the law; and if they should be disposed to exercise will instead of judgement; the consequences would be the substitution of their pleasure for that of the legislative body."

The University of Maryland School of Law Chapter of the Federalist Society is a group of conservative, libertarian, and moderate law students who believe in three main principles.

  • The state exists to preserve freedom
  • The separation of governmental powers is central to our Constitution
  • The province and duty of the judiciary is to say what the law is, not what it should be

We work to promote awareness of these principles at the University of Maryland School of Law and beyond. Each term, we organize a wide range of activities such as speeches and debates by noted legal scholars and political figures, student symposia and colloquia, along with social events and other gatherings.

The Federalist Society is a membership organization of over 35,000 judges, lawyers, law students, and scholars.

  • The Society’s chief goal is to foster balanced and open debate about the fundamental principles of individual freedom, limited government, and judicial restraint.
  • Our members hold diverse and often conflicting views on a broad range of issues.
  • Membership is open to anyone who wants to join.

We exist solely to promote the exchange of ideas, not to promote particular policies, appointments, or politicians. We do not adopt political stances or advocate for political outcomes. We do not lobby for legislation. We neither sponsor nor endorse nominees or candidates for public office.
