The Business Law Society (BLS) was formed and recognized by the Student Bar Association in the spring of 2003 to fill a much needed gap in the available student organizations. BLS exists to provide networking, educational, and career opportunities in an encouraging environment, allowing University of Maryland law students to gain practical knowledge of areas of business law, to meet other students with similar interests, and to gain insight from practicing lawyers in all areas of business law.
BLS already has a substantial and growing, active membership, including members and editors of law journals, J.D./M.B.A. candidates, as well as current and former Student Bar Association and other student organization executive board members.
The organization, its officers and committee chairs are
all dedicated to providing extensive benefits to BLS members
each semester, including:
- Education on various aspects of business and corporate law, including but not limited to: corporate transactions, corporate litigation, securities, mergers & acquisitions, real estate transactions, and commercial transactions through speaker presentations, panel discussions, and document drafting seminars;
- Networking opportunities with transactional and litigation attorneys working within the field of business and corporate law, as well as corporate counsel and local business persons;
- Development of a strengthened business law curriculum within the School of Law, including increased business classes, class offerings, and scheduling, in order to meet the needs of the ambitious business law student.
