The Maryland Katrina and Indigent Defense Project is comprised of more than fifty law students at the University of Maryland School of Law. The group was informally created in March 2006 in response to the overwhelming need that still exists in New Orleans two years since the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.

Law students have donated their valuable vacation time to the rebuilding effort, working with Catholic Charities and Habitat for Humanity reconstructing homes in affected areas, and with the New Orleans Office of the Public Defender, focusing on bond hearings and prison conditions.
