The ACLU is a national organization devoted to the preservation and expansion of the Bill of Rights, with an emphasis on freedom of speech. The ACLU works to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to every person in this country by the Constitution and laws of the United States. The mission of the ACLU is to preserve the following protections and guarantees:

  1. the First Amendment rights-freedom of speech, association and assembly.
  2. the right to equal protection under the law - equal treatment regardless of race, sex, religion or national origin.
  3. the right to due process - fair treatment by the government whenever the loss of your liberty or property is at stake.
  4. the right to privacy - freedom from unwarranted government intrusion into your personal and private affairs.

The ACLU works also to extend rights to segments of our population that have traditionally been denied their rights, including Native Americans and other people of color; lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and transgendered people; women; mental-health patients; prisoners; people with disabilities; and the poor. The law school affiliate seeks to expand student awareness of these important civil liberties by bringing in local and national speakers on censorship, racism, diversity, voting rights, prisoner’s rights, and other issues. If the rights of society’s most vulnerable members are denied, everybody’s rights are imperiled.
