The ACLU is a national organization devoted to the preservation and expansion of the Bill of Rights, with an emphasis on freedom of speech. The ACLU works to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to every person in this country by the Constitution and laws of the United States. The mission of the ACLU is to preserve the following protections and guarantees:
The ACLU works also to extend rights to segments of our population that have traditionally been denied their rights, including Native Americans and other people of color; lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and transgendered people; women; mental-health patients; prisoners; people with disabilities; and the poor. The law school affiliate seeks to expand student awareness of these important civil liberties by bringing in local and national speakers on censorship, racism, diversity, voting rights, prisoner’s rights, and other issues. If the rights of society’s most vulnerable members are denied, everybody’s rights are imperiled.
