East Asian Legal Studies

The East Asian Legal Studies Program (EALSP) provides students with an opportunity for advanced independent research and extracurricular programs, including conferences, informal seminars, speakers, and visiting scholars from East Asia. Directed by Professor Hungdah Chiu, an international law scholar and expert on Chinese law, EALSP is dedicated to providing a forum for members of the legal community to present their findings and views relating to East Asian issues. It publishes quarterly and annual publications and possesses a large Chinese law books collection (both on China and Taiwan), which was transferred to the school's law library in 2004 to make it available on a national database.

Since 1977, the program has published almost 200 issues of Maryland Series in Contemporary Asian Studies. This series has published over 192 issues, many of which have been adopted as required reading in college courses. Since 1979, EALSP has also published 12 titles in the Maryland Studies in East Asian Law and Politics Series and 22 volumes of Chinese (Taiwan) Yearbook of International Law and Affairs.

EALSP has continued to successfully keep its readers informed of current legal, political, social, and economic events relating to East Asia. The program encourages law school students and faculty, as well as scholars and practitioners in the legal community, to continue to submit articles relating to East Asia.
