The Osborne Scholarship

The Osborne Scholarship at the University of Maryland Carey School of Law was created by Hamish Osborne ’86 and his wife Christy to provide full tuition and fees for an outstanding student who is engaged in a professional career at the time of application to law school.  The Osborne Scholarship will go to a student enrolled in the full-time program at Maryland Carey Law who has a stated interest in pursuing a career in private legal practice or business (defined broadly to include business, financial, commercial and law-related activities in government, health, or the private sector).

Criteria for Consideration:

  • Engaged in a professional career at the time of application to the Maryland Carey School of Law, with at least two years of full-time work experience prior to application
  • Exhibiting leadership in career and a history of community service
  • Demonstration of financial need
  • Academic promise
  • Long-term goal of and stated interest in pursuing a career in private legal practice or business

Requirements:

  • Application for admission to the full-time day program
  • Separate Osborne Scholarship application
  • Letter of recommendation from a current or former employer
  • Telephonic or in-person interview

Expectations of Osborne Scholars

It is the intent of the Donors that the students selected as Osborne Scholars contribute significantly to the life of the School.  Examples of ways in which Osborne Scholars might fulfill this expectation include:

  • Participation on a Maryland Carey Law journal
  • Participation in one of the appellate, trial, or ADR oral advocacy teams
  • Leadership role in a student organization
  • Internship, externship, or fellowship in a law-related field during summer or academic year
  • Participation in events related to the Osborne endowment

Additional Benefits

In addition to the full scholarship award, the Osborne Scholar will be invited to meet with the donors of the scholarship endowment and will be invited to participate in a variety of leadership-related and business law-related events throughout each year.  These include the Leadership, Ethics and Professionalism Program at Maryland Carey Law.  The Osborne Scholar will be assigned an alumni mentor and a faculty mentor and will be invited to participate in the Lunch with a Leader series.  Other networking opportunities will be provided, including an annual gathering of the Osborne Scholarship recipients.
