Information for Prospective WLE Students: In addition to teaching me skills to help me advance my own career, the Women, Leadership, & Equality Program (“WLE”) program opened my eyes to the need for women to help women. For example, because of the WLE, I had the opportunity to be an extern at the Marjorie Cook Domestic Violence Legal Clinic (“DVLC”) at the House of Ruth Maryland. The DVLC is a non-profit organization focused on providing free legal services to victims of intimate partner domestic violence. Not only did my externship provide me with the opportunity to experience non-profit legal work, but my externship also made it clear that there is a real need for attorneys to assist domestic violence victims, most of whom are women, with their legal concerns. Although I plan to work in a private firm after graduation, I also plan to actively perform pro bono legal services aimed at helping women. Without the WLE, I do not think that I would have sought out pro bono work so early in my career because I would have thought that I needed to focus solely on my own work. I highly recommend the WLE program for many reasons, but especially because the WLE has showed me how to create a win-win situation in my legal career—I can benefit society by helping others with their legal problems and at the same time benefit my career by networking and establishing meaningful relationships in other women-focused organizations.
