Clinic Submits Comments to MDE Advocating for the Health and Welfare of Local Communities

Since 2008, the Environmental Law Clinic has represented several citizens and civic organizations in Prince George’s County that are affected by multiple facilities in an industrial area that borders residential communities. In the fall of 2015, the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) issued a tentative determination to approve a permit to construct an asphalt crushing operation that would also be located in the industrial area. The effects of the existing facilities, including air pollution and excessive truck traffic, already burden the communities, and the Clinic’s clients, as well as several other community members, citizen groups, and local representatives, are concerned that the crushing facility will only make those problems worse. In January 2016, the Clinic submitted written comments on the tentative determination, explaining its clients’ concerns to MDE and advocating for a more stringent permit that protects the health and welfare of the surrounding communities.
