ADR Team Completes 2017 Competition Season with Multiple Victories

Sydney Fortmann (3L) and
Trey Hilberg (3L)
Achieving one of the highest results of any Maryland Carey Law ADR Team, students Trey Hilberg (3L) and Sydney Fortmann (3L) were semi-finalists at the 2017 American Bar Association (ABA) Law Student Division Negotiation Competition this past February. The Team, coached by Adjunct Professor Barry Gogel ’97, advanced to the finals after 24 teams competed in the regional event, hosted by Maryland Carey Law. Progressing to national rounds in ABA dispute resolution competitions, Maryland Carey Law’s ADR Team has provided students with many opportunities over the past year to apply negotiation and mediation skills in simulated settings.

Andy Sylvia (2L), Molly Boyd '16, and Austin Strine (3L)
The teams of Andy Sylvia (2L) and Austin Strine (3L), and Andrea Marcin (2L) and Henry Callegary (3L) competed in the ABA Section of Dispute Resolution Regional Representation in Mediation Competition at Antonin Scalia School of Law. After two rounds of competition Henry and Andrea placed fifth and Andy and Austin advanced from the regional finals to the National Representation in Mediation Competition. This is the fifth year in a row that a Maryland Carey Law team competed in the regional finals. Recent graduate and former Mediation Clinic student, Molly Boyd ’16 coached the team along with team advisor Toby Guerin ’02.

Matthew Sarna (3L), Meagan George (2L), and Alex Chiang (2L)
In only the second year of competing in the FINRA (financial industry regulatory authority) ADR triathlon, the team of Matthew Sarna (3L), Meagan George (2L), and Alex Chiang (2L), performed exceptionally well. The triathlon tests students in the three discrete dispute resolution processes of negotiation, mediation, and arbitration. The team placed second in mediation out of 18 schools. The students were coached by recent graduate and former ADR Team member Sue DuMont (’16) and assisted with arbitration preparation by attorneys from Miles and Stockbridge.

Students Collin Wojchiechowski (2L), Andy Sylvia (2L), and Eli Sherlock (2L) had notable performances at the International ADR Competition at the University of Massachusetts Lowell receiving first place in attorney-client team and third and tenth place individual mediator. The students participated in three rounds of competition, serving alternatively as the lawyer, client, and mediator.

Following the spring intra-school negotiation competition, the ADR Team welcomed sixteen new members and said good-bye and congratulations to fifteen graduating students.
