Maryland Carey Law Dispute Resolution Skills Demonstrated at Local and National Competitions

During the spring semester the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Team participated in a variety of dispute resolution-related competitions with some impressive results. This year the team sent students to a few new competitions and worked to develop partnerships within Maryland Carey Law. To this end, the ADR Team paired with the Environmental Law Program to participate in an environmental competition and ADR Team members served as mooters with law students engaged in other negotiation competitions.

Team members Molly Boyd, Alex Kelly, and Sherri Weinstein represented one of 52 teams from four continents who competed in the International Academy of Dispute Resolution Law School Mediation Tournament hosted by Loyola University School of Law. The tournament requires students to serve in the role of mediator, attorney, and client at least once during the competition. MD Carey Law students received three different recognitions and advanced to the semi-final round in the role of mediator. Notably, Kelly received 6th place for Outstanding Individual Mediator (out of 156 competitors); Weinstein and Boyd received 3rd place as Outstanding Individual Advocate/Client Pair (out of 52 teams); and the Maryland Carey Law team was honored with the 9th overall Mediator Team (out of 52 teams). The students were joined by their coach and ADR Team advisor, Toby Guerin.

Team members Hilary Tebeleff and Hillary Clecker, and Joe Sweeny and Jenny Cameron represented Maryland Carey Law at the regional competition of the ABA Section on Dispute Resolution Representation in Mediation Competition. The teams were coached by former ADR Team member Nick Scull and performed well in one of the most competitive mediation advocacy environments.

Rounding out the negotiation competitions, team members Drew Ricci and Kirsten Eckroad were one of only six teams to advance to the semi-finals in the Liberty University Law Student Negotiation Competition hosted at Liberty University School of Law. Maryland Carey Law alumna Barry Gogel served as the coach for this competition.

The ADR Team partnered with the Environmental Law Program to participate in the Robert R. Merhige, Jr. National Environmental Negotiation Competition hosted by the University of Richmond School of Law. Two teams of students, Adetokunbo (Toks) Arowojolu and Courtney Kuhn, and Nick Media and Fernando Kirkman were coached by former ADR Team members Mary Biscoe-Hall and Josh Chazen and received assistance from the law school’s Bill Piermattei and former and ADR Team members Ben Smith and Chelsea Kadish. Toks and Courtney were judged the winners in all three of their competition rounds.

During the spring intra-school competition, the ADR Team welcomed 17 new members and congratulated 13 graduating team members.
