When children drop out of school they are more likely to commit crimes, engage in illegal drug activity, or be hurt. C-DRUM's truancy prevention initiative BSMART (Baltimore Students: Mediation About Reducing Truancy) is sponsored by a grant C-DRUM received from the Charles Crane Family Foundation in 2007. The program currently works with six Baltimore City schools to improve attendance by encouraging communication between the family and school through mediation. Unlike many other truancy intervention models, BSMART mediation is available before the truancy becomes chronic or the family has been referred to the court system. The mediations are free, voluntary and private. Additionally, law students enrolled in the Mediation Clinic are also trained in truancy mediation and have the opportunity to observe and mediate the school-based sessions.
