The Maryland State Bar Association took over the publishing and programming offerings by the Maryland Institute for Continuing Professional Education
of Lawyers, Inc. (commonly known as MICPEL), in March of 2010.
MICPEL was formed in 1976 through the cooperative efforts of the Maryland State Bar Association (MSBA), the University of Baltimore Law School and the University of Maryland School of Law and provided a series of institutes, workshops, seminars and publications to provide specialized training to members of the bar. It also offered approved Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credits in Delaware, Pennsylvania and Virginia, in addition to Maryland.
CLE programs and MSBA/MICPEL publications are now available from MSBA's new CLE Department, which offers electronic and live CLE programs plus an array of MSBA/MICPEL publications by experts on topics such as torts, probate, will drafting, bankruptcy, landlord/tenant, and worker's compensation. Publications are practice oriented and contain up-to-date information and forms. The Thurgood Marshall Law Library also provides access to MSBA and MICPEL materials in print, which can be found in our catalog. See this persistent link to search for books and other materials by the "Maryland State Bar Association"or MSBA. Or search the catalog with Maryland Institute for Continuing Professional Education of Lawyers to retrieve the library's holdings of MICPEL print titles. Most of the titles deal with Maryland law and are located in the Maryland collection on Level 2 (KFM classification). Publications covering topics in American law are also on Level 2 in the American law section (KF classification).
The Law Library also provides online access to many archived MICPEL titles through both Lexis (MICPEL) and Westlaw (MD-CLE) services. Access to these databases is by subscription only.
