MICPEL Resources

The Maryland Institute for Continuing Professional Education of Lawyers, Inc., commonly known as MICPEL, was formed in 1976 through the cooperative efforts of the Maryland Bar Association, the University of Baltimore Law School and the University of Maryland School of Law. The mission of MICPEL is to provide “the highest quality continuing professional education for the practice of law in Maryland” (source: http://www.micpel.edu/). It operates through a series of institutes, workshops, seminars and publications to provide specialized training to members of the bar and to offer approved Continuing Legal Education credits in Delaware, Pennsylvania and Virginia, in addition to Maryland. Full-time University of Maryland, Baltimore law students and faculty members are eligible for complimentary course registration in select MICPEL courses.

MICPEL has published a series of notebooks by experts on topics such as torts, probate, will drafting, bankruptcy, landlord/tenant, and worker's compensation. Publications are practice oriented and contain up-to-date information and forms. The Thurgood Marshall Law Library provides online access to many MICPEL titles through both Lexis (MICPEL) and Westlaw (MD-CLE) services. Access to these databases is by subscription only. The library also subscribes to the full list of print titles offered by MICPEL. A catalog search on the subject Maryland Institute for Continuing Professional Education of Lawyers will retrieve the library's holdings. Most of the MICPEL titles deal with Maryland law and are located in the Maryland collection on Level 2 (KFM classification). MICPEL publications covering topics in American law are also on Level 2 in the American law section (KF classification).
