James R. Hart III "Trey" is a Vice President on Northern Trust's global private equity team. He is responsible for sourcing and analyzing venture capital fund investment opportunities in the U.S., Europe and Asia. Mr. Hart also spends time positioning Northern Trust's capabilities with consulting firms in addition to communicating with both existing and prospective investors. Prior to joining Northern Trust in 2013, he was a Vice President at Greenspring Associates, a $2.3 billion global venture capital fund-of-funds based in Baltimore, Maryland. At Greenspring Associates, he was active in all aspects of the investment process, including primary fund investments, direct investments and secondary fund/direct investments. Additionally, he was active in the firm's global fundraising efforts. Prior to Greenspring Associates, Mr. Hart was an Associate at Kirkland & Ellis LLP, in the international law firm's private equity practice. He is a magna cum laude graduate of Washington and Lee University and a magna cum laude and Order of the Coif graduate of the University of Maryland School of Law, where he was an associate editor of the Maryland Law Review. While in law school, he worked at New Enterprise Associates, the $13 billion global venture capital firm, in its Baltimore, Maryland offices. He is a licensed attorney in the State of Illinois and currently serves as a member of the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law's Alumni Board, where he teaches a seminar on venture capital and entrepreneurship. He is also the Founder of the Chicago Area Limited Partners Association (CALPA), Chicago's first and only limited partner association focused on private equity investing.
