Toby Treem Guerin, JD, Managing Director of the Center for Dispute Resolution at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law (C-DRUM) and Clinical Law Instructor has fifteen years of conflict resolution and mediation experience. Ms. Guerin co-instructs the Mediation Clinic, oversees the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) externship program, and serves as an advisor and coach to the law school’s ADR Team in national and international mediation and negotiation competitions.
Ms. Guerin served in a two-year role as the first Chair of the Mediator Excellence Council, the collaborative body of mediators developing the Maryland Program for Mediator Excellence. As chair she was responsible for overseeing the formation and implementation of the first practitioner-based organization in Maryland focusing on the provision of quality mediation services. In addition to chairing the council, she continues to chair the Mentoring Task Group. In this role, Ms. Guerin has helped to complete a pilot mentoring program and develop a state-wide mentoring initiative in Maryland. Most recently, Ms. Guerin served as the primary author for the “Alternative Dispute Resolution Landscape: An Overview of ADR in the Maryland Court System,” a comprehensive overview of court-affiliated ADR programs in Maryland.
Ms. Guerin mediates in the court, state agency, and community mediation settings. She has received advanced mediation training in the topics of elder mediation, probate mediation, and facilitation of Individualized Education Plan meetings. She has also received training in facilitation, public dialogues, conflict management coaching for mediators, and on the role of an ombudsperson. She remains active in Maryland’s alternative dispute resolution and legal communities having served in leadership positions with the Anne Arundel Conflict Resolution Center, Maryland Council for Dispute Resolution, and MD State Bar Association Section on Dispute Resolution.
Ms. Guerin graduated with honors from the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law and is a member of the Maryland Bar. She holds a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
