Biography
Cynthia Blake Sanders teaches Entertainment and Sports Law from the perspective of intellectual property law. Cynthia is an experienced media and entertainment lawyer with the firm Ober|Kaler. Her practice centers on clearance, protection and licensing of creative materials and brands, commercial speech, and technology transfer issues. She handles copyright, trademark, fair use, and regulatory compliance issues related to media. Cynthia serves as general counsel to a wide variety of media businesses including traditional and electronic publishers, advertisers, advertising and interactive agencies, filmmakers, labels, producers, artists, songwriters, authors, and designers, as well as large health care businesses and non profits, colleges and universities, trade associations, internet businesses, and software developers.
A textile artist and graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art, Cynthia continues to be an active member of Baltimore’s arts community. She is an editor and writer for the MLA Arts Brief and frequent speaker for Maryland Lawyers for the Arts. Cynthia also serves on the boards of the Baltimore School for the Arts, the Baltimore Chapter of the American Advertising Federation (AAF Baltimore), and Black Cherry Puppet Theater.
Cynthia is a member of the Maryland State Bar Association’s Intellectual Property and Entertainment and Sports Law Sections. She earned her B.F.A from MICA in 1985 and her J.D. from the University of Maryland School of Law in 1999.
Cynthia lives in the Stony Run community of Baltimore City with her husband, artist D.S. Bakker and children Anna and John. Cynthia enjoys running, yoga and gardening.
