James Egerton-Vernon's practice is focused on investor-state and commercial arbitration disputes. He has acted in several international arbitrations under the ICSID, ICC, UNCITRAL, SCC, and SIAC rules. James has particular experience in the oil, mining, gas, telecommunications, and construction sectors.
James' representations prior to joining Jones Day in 2013 include advising clients with investments in the Venezuelan oil sector, in both English and Spanish, on their claims arising out of unilateral changes to the hydrocarbon regime in that country. He has also assisted in handling disputes as diverse as advising a Brazilian energy company on a construction dispute with its Italian joint venture partner; advising a Kuwaiti fertilizer company in ICSID arbitration proceedings against Egypt; advising a Romanian energy company in multi-million dollar ICC arbitration proceedings against a Russian oligarch; advising an Australian bank in relation to threatened arbitration proceedings against a Singaporean joint venture partner; advising a Brazilian utilities company in relation to its international law obligations under the Mercosur Public Procurement Protocol; advising a Russian pig-farming company in settlement negotiations over a shareholder dispute involving two SCC arbitrations, in excess of ten Russian regional court proceedings and one complaint at the Paris Bar; and advising a Spanish entertainment company in Madrid-based LCIA arbitration proceedings pertaining to a post-purchase M&A dispute. James also completed a six-month secondment to Barclays Bank PLC to assist it with an investigation into its compliance with the international sanctions regime.
James is a member of many international arbitration associations, serves as assistant editor of ICSID Review — Foreign Investment Law Journal and publishes regularly on commercial and investor-state arbitration.
