Ms. Sale graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in art history in 1970. She graduated at the top of her class from George Washington Law School in 1978 (high honors, law review, Order of the Coif), and became a member of the Maryland bar that fall. She served as law clerk to United States District Judge for the District of Maryland C. Stanley Blair from September 1978 until May 1980, when she was recruited to join the United States Attorney's Office.
She has been a federal prosecutor ever since, and has earned many awards and honors in that position. She has prosecuted every kind of federal case, from bank robbery to tax evasion, drug conspiracy and murder to public corruption and major fraud. She has been the Chief of the Criminal Division in the United States Attorney’s Office, where she supervises all criminal prosecutions, since 2001.
