Biography

Honorable John F. Gossart, Jr.

Judge Gossart was appointed a United States Immigration Judge in1982 by Attorney General William Fench Smith. Upon his retirement in 2013 he was the 3rd most senior immigration judge in the United States. He was awarded the Attorney General Medal for his dedicated service to the court.

Judge Gossart received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maryland in 1967 and his Juris Doctor degree cum laude fm the University of Baltimore School of Law in 1974.

From 1975 through 1982 Judge Gossart served in various postions with the former Immigration and Naturalization Service, inluding general attorney, natualization attorney,trial attorney, and Deputy Assistant Commissioner for Naturalization. Since 1997, Judge Gossart has been an adjunct professor of law at the Unversity of Baltimore School of Law teaching immigration law. He has been a faculty member of the National Judicial College and has guest lectured at numerous law schools and the former Maryland Institute for the Continuing Education of Lawyers. He is the former president of the National Association of Immigration Judges.

Judge Gossart served in the United States Army from 1967to 1969 and is a Vietnam veteran. He is  memr of the Maryland and District of Columbia Bars.
