Biography
James F. Doherty, Jr. is a principal in the Maryland law firm of Pecore & Doherty, LLC, representing health systems and individual, group and institutional health care providers and suppliers. Mr. Doherty was the Vice President and General Counsel of New American Health, LLC, a managed care organization (MCO) affiliated with the Baltimore Washington Medical Center and Carroll Hospital Center and he spent four years as the Senior Counsel for Integrated Services of the Johns Hopkins Health System. Mr. Doherty was an associate at Michaels & Wishner, P.C. in Washington, D.C., representing managed care and other health care industry clients for four years and spent three years as Associate Counsel to Tenet Health Care, a Fortune 500 proprietary hospital chain. Prior to becoming an attorney, Mr. Doherty spent five years as the Communications Director of the American Health Lawyers Association in Washington, D.C., a non-profit educational association of attorneys and health care professionals. While at AHLA, Mr. Doherty was a Contributing Editor to the Health Law Digest and the Health Lawyers News Report. He maintains faculty appointments at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, where he teaches “Legal and Ethical Issues in Health Services Management” and the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law, where he teaches “Health Care Law and Policy”. He is a frequent lecturer on managed care, health law and related topics. Mr. Doherty has an undergraduate degree in Philosophy from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota and received his JD from the Columbus School of Law at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He is married to Margaret M. Leonard, Esq., a Staff Attorney with the Legal Aid Bureau of Maryland, Inc. of Annapolis, and has one daughter, Alice Leonard Doherty.
