The Global Advancement Of Women: Barriers and Best Practices

April 6-7, 2006

This conference seeks to explore the role of women in a changing global environment. Women around the world still face tremendous barriers in terms of their physical and economic security.

This conference will explore those barriers and will focus on best practices that are being implemented by international organizations to eliminate those barriers. We seek to explore such topics as violence against women, women's health issues, environmental concerns, political representation, judicial and legal protections, and economic security. Panelists will discuss programs that seek to alleviate violence against women, to enhance the training of judges and to increase economic self-sufficiency, like microcredit programs. International human rights and law reform efforts will also be explored. The goal of the conference is to identify existing barriers and give scholars and experts working in the field an opportunity to discuss how those barriers can best be overcome.

Papers presented at the Conference will be published in an upcoming issue of the University of Maryland Law Journal of Race, Religion, Gender and Class.
