This event will begin with an overview by Professor Patricia Campbell, Director of the Maryland Intellectual Property Legal Resource Center, explaining the relevant law and remedies to the counterfeiting problem. In the morning and afternoon sessions, nine speakers will give presentations on counterfeiting in their various fields of expertise, including counterfeiting of electronic products, pharmaceuticals and medical devices, fashion, athletic apparel and wine, as well as consumer complicity in counterfeiting activities. Representatives from the United States government will discuss the impact of the counterfeiting problem and the government's initiatives in combating counterfeiting. The Symposium will also explore alternative remedies, including use of design patents and new legislation to address copying of designs. Each speaker's presentation will identify germane public policy issues implicated by the counterfeiting problem and will educate law students and practitioners on how to deal with counterfeiting in practice.
