As law students poised to enter the legal profession we find ourselves in a position to aid others. But what do you do when you have a client who tells you they have been suffering abuse? This symposium will gather distinguished professors, lobbyists, advocates and experts to create a forum for discussion on topics such as: causes and consequences of domestic violence against women, current laws that help or hinder abused women, and available resources for abused women and lawyers who want to help them. We will also address the varying theoretical approaches to tackling domestic violence issues with respect to the existing system: what works, what doesn't, and what should be altered. This symposium will consist of lunch, panelist presentations, and a question and answer session.

Our distinguished panelists include:

  • Cynthia Lifson, lobbyist for the Maryland Network Against Domestic Violence
  • Ellen Hare, staff attorney from the Women's Law Center of Maryland, Protection Order Advocacy and Representation Project
  • Margaret Johnson, law professor at University of Baltimore and legal scholar on Domestic Violence
  • Leigh Goodmark, law professor at University of Baltimore, and legal scholar on Domestic Violence.
