Domestic Violence: Causes, Prevention and Advocacy

Ellen Hare

Ellen Hare is a Senior Attorney with the Womenís Law Center of MD, Inc. Mrs. Hare attended the University of Baltimore Law School receiving her Juris Doctor in 1994. She practiced Family Law with a small law firm for seven years. In 2002, she helped the Womenís Law Center establish the Protection Order Advocacy & Representation Project (POARP) in the Baltimore County Circuit Court where she has worked for the last seven years. POARP is an emergency walk-in legal clinic for victims of domestic violence located in the Circuit Court which provides free Protective Order legal advice and representation. As a POARP attorney, she has helped hundreds of victims of domestic violence obtain Protective Orders against their abusers, including helping them to obtain custody of their children and emergency family maintenance. In addition, she has helped victims obtain modifications and extensions of Protective Orders, assisted with contempt of Protective Orders, and assisted victims with navigating the criminal process for both violations of Protective Orders and the criminal assault cases. Mrs. Hare helps train DSS Domestic Violence hotline volunteers, lectures once a semester at Stevenson University for Judge Duganís family and juvenile law classes, and has talked with small groups of victims for hospital and domestic violence counseling agencies.
